In a post in the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's "Impatient Optimists" blog, Elisa Baldini, an advocacy and campaigns officer with Plan E.U., examines the future of European Union aid, writing, "Last week, European Union leaders came together for a decisive summit to discuss how much they think the E.U. should spend from 2014-2020, and what they should spend the budget on."
Continual genomic surveillance of the SARS-CoV-2 strains in South Africa has revealed an increase in the number of sequences belonging to C.1 lineage during the third wave (May 2021) of SARS-CoV-2 infections. This observation was unexpected because C.1 was last reported in January 2021.

The group "came away concerned about widespread malnutrition and starvation in North Korea" and "is now calling for an urgent humanitarian intervention," "The World" reports.
"More than 30 million children in seven countries in East Asia and the Pacific are deprived of at least one essential service such as basic health care, safe drinking water or access to education, according to a United Nations study," AlertNet reports.
