A Keck Medicine of USC-led team of microbiologists has identified previously unknown interactions between critical proteins in the human immune response system, uncovering two independent regulatory mechanisms that keep the body's immune response in check. Their findings appear in the February 2014 edition of Cell Host & Microbe, the top peer-reviewed scientific journal that focuses on the study of cell-pathogen interaction.
Medtronic, Inc. today announced it has completed Pre-Market Approval (PMA) submission in consideration for U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for the Medtronic Arctic Front® Cardiac CryoAblation Catheter System, which is designed for patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF), an irregular quivering of the upper chambers of the heart that starts and stops on its own. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common heart arrhythmia in the United States, with an estimated three million patients suffering from this condition.
Starting tomorrow (June 22), new regulations and FDA rules authorized by the Family Smoking and Prevention Act will further limit the tobacco industry's ability to deceive consumers with misleading marketing and labeling that imply "light," "mild" or "low-tar" cigarettes are safer, as well as other practices that make products more appealing to youth.
Patients from Family Health Care Centers of Greater Los Angeles received pro bono outpatient surgeries to repair hernias, remove cataracts and gallbladders on Saturday, May 21. A team of about 70 doctors, nurses and support staff from Kaiser Permanente Downey Medical Center worked for free to provide patients with life-changing procedures—some have been waiting for months even years for these surgeries.
