OEPA reports substantial reduction of river blindness in six endemic countries

A regional initiative launched in the 1990s to eliminate onchocerciasis (river blindness) in the Americas has substantially reduced the prevalence of the disease in recent years, as evidenced by a 31% decrease in the number of individuals requiring mass drug administration in six endemic countries. Results were reported today at the 58th annual meeting of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH).

Vibration-based therapy can successfully treat apnea events in preterm infants

Researchers from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University and the University of Massachusetts Medical School have found that a vibration-based therapy known as stochastic resonance (SR) stimulation can successfully treat preterm infants experiencing apnea of prematurity (AOP), disrupted breathing, bradycardia (slowed heart rate) and oxygen desaturation (diminished oxygen levels).

Little evidence for mRNA COVID-19 vaccine-associated thrombocytopenia, suggests new FDA study

Even as a host of vaccines have been rolled out to counter the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, some serious adverse effects have been reported, in the form of thrombocytopenia. A new study in the journal Vaccine reports the results of an evaluation of reported cases of this condition, using data from the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS).

After long, wrenching, debates with sometimes-graphic testimony about fetuses, the House approved bills Friday that would ban all abortions in Minnesota after 20 weeks of gestation and prohibit public money from paying for the procedure. The 20-week ban was approved, largely along party lines in the Republican-led chamber, 82-46.
