FDA grants Stryker 510(k) clearance for MDM X3 Mobile Bearing Hip System

Stryker Corporation's Orthopaedics Division today announced U.S. Food and Drug Administration 510(k) clearance for its MDM X3 Modular Dual Mobility Mobile Bearing Hip System. MDM X3 is an addition to the company's portfolio of next-generation technologies designed to minimize the risks traditionally associated with hip replacement surgery and address a broader patient population, including both primary and revision total hip arthroplasty candidates.

Preoperative auto-titrated CPAP treatment benefits patients with OSA after surgery

An estimated 80 percent of patients who have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) go undiagnosed, including Deanna G. McNeil, a 72-year-old nurse from Toronto. Before hip replacement surgery in 2010, Deanna completed the STOP-Bang questionnaire, created by Frances Chung, M.B.B.S., professor, Department of Anesthesia, University of Toronto, Ontario. Based on the questionnaire, Deanna was suspected to have OSA.

Patients with non-small cell lung cancer treated with PCI decrease their risk of developing brain metastases

Patients with non-small cell lung cancer treated with preventative brain radiation (called prophylactic cranial irradiation or PCI), significantly decrease their risk of developing brain metastases (cancer spread in the brain) by more than 50 percent (from 18 percent to 8 percent), compared to those who did not receive the treatment, according to a randomized study presented at the plenary session November 2, 2009, at the 51st Annual Meeting of American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO).
