A team of researchers has devised a Pac-Man-style power pellet that gets normally mild-mannered cells to gobble up their undesirable neighbors. The development may point the way to therapies that enlist patients' own cells to better fend off infection and even cancer, the researchers say. A description of the work will be published July 15 in the journal Science Signaling.
Local scientists, health advocates and leaders from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine will gather in San Diego June 23 for a special public meeting to spotlight a new University of California, San Diego grant to pursue novel, fast-tracked stem cell-based therapies for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's disease.
Now there is additional evidence of the connection between the intake of antioxidant supplements and increased tumor growth. Experiments on animals and human cancer tissue confirm that addition of some antioxidants increases the growth of the severe malignant melanoma type of skin cancer.
Last week, "Nigeria launched a multi-year national plan for the control and elimination of neglected tropical diseases (NTD Master Plan)," which "provides a platform for Nigeria to stimulate global efforts to reach elimination and control of diseases under the London Declaration and Millennium Development Goal 6," Mawish Raza, communications intern for the Global Network for Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), writes in the group's "End The Neglect" blog.
