Uptake Medical, a privately held interventional pulmonology company, announced today that it has concluded its Series B financing from an investment group led by Maverick Capital, a new investor. Selenium reduces Staph populations in medical implants

Selenium is an inexpensive element that naturally belongs in the body. It is also known to combat bacteria. Still, it had not been tried as an antibiotic coating on a medical device material. In a new study, Brown University engineers report that when they used selenium nanoparticles to coat polycarbonate, the material of catheters and endotracheal tubes, the results were significant reductions in cultured populations of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, sometimes by as much as 90 percent.

Supportive data from a preclinical study of SCY-635 to be presented

Drug discovery company SCYNEXIS, Inc. today announced that supportive data from a preclinical study of the Company's lead product candidate for hepatitis C (HCV), SCY-635, will be presented in a poster session at the 60th Annual Meeting of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) being held in Boston, MA, October 30-November 3, 2009.
