Zimbabwe has shifted from a voluntary HIV testing system to a provider-initiated system in which medical professionals incorporate HIV testing into routine medical exams with the permission of their patients, Zimbabwe's The Herald reports.
Among patients who had an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, intravenous sodium nitrite given by paramedics during resuscitation did not significantly improve their chances of being admitted to or discharged from the hospital alive, according to research presented at the American College of Cardiology's Annual Scientific Session Together with World Congress of Cardiology.
Researchers at University of California, San Diego School of Medicine have discovered a cell signaling pathway that appears to exert some control over initiation and progression of colorectal cancer, the third leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States. A key protein in the pathway also appears to be predictive of cancer survival rates.
Aphios Corporation today announced that it was awarded United States Patent No. 7,708,915 B2 for "Polymer Microspheres/Nanospheres and Encapsulating Therapeutic Proteins Therein," granted May 04, 2010. This invention is an improved process to formulate polymeric microspheres and nanospheres, and encapsulate therapeutic proteins or other useful substances, and a polymer microspheres/nanospheres apparatus.
