Discovery Laboratories, Inc. announces today that it has received written guidance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that is consistent with its ongoing, comprehensive preclinical program to resolve the sole remaining chemistry, manufacturing & control (CMC) issue necessary to potentially gain FDA marketing approval for Surfaxin® (lucinactant) for the prevention of Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS) in premature infants.

Stress-evoked changes can precipitate low mood and re-ignite drug-seeking behaviors

Stress-evoked changes in circuits that regulate serotonin in certain parts of the brain can precipitate a low mood and a relapse in cocaine-seeking, based on mouse studies published online this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Phase II trial finds fostamatinib ineffective in RA patients not responsive to biologic agents

In a previous study, rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients who failed to respond to methotrexate were shown to experience positive results with fostamatinib disodium (R788), an oral spleen tyrosine kinase (Syk) inhibitor that is thought to block immune cell signaling involved with bone and cartilage destruction. In the current study, RA patients who failed to respond to biologic agents were studied.

Angiotensin system inhibitor use improves metastatic RCC survival outcomes

Use of angiotensin system inhibitors is associated with significant survival benefits in metastatic renal cell carcinoma patients treated in the targeted therapy era, research findings indicate.

Study finds broader statin use as a cost-effective way to prevent heart attack and stroke

A new analysis suggests that broader statin use among adult patients may be a cost-effective way to prevent heart attack and stroke. The Stanford University School of Medicine study also found that using a popular test - a screening for high sensitivity C-reactive protein, or CRP - to identify patients who may benefit from statin therapy would be cost-effective, but only under certain scenarios.
