For years, researchers and patients have hoped that embryonic stem cells (ESCs)-capable of forming nearly any cell type in the body-could provide insight into numerous diseases perhaps even be used to treat them. Yet progress has been hampered by the inability to transfer research and tools from mouse ESC studies to their human counterparts, in part because human ESCs are "primed" and slightly less plastic than the mouse cells.
April is National Cancer Control Month, which focuses on the prevention, detection, and treatment of cancer and on efforts to improve the quality of life of the more than 11 million cancer survivors in the United States.
After analyzing data on 2,155 private contractors, diplomats and other civilians supporting war efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan who were medically evacuated out of combat zones, researchers have found they are more likely to be evacuated for noncombat-related injuries, but more likely to return to work in-country after treatment for these conditions.
The Gerontological Society of America (GSA) - the nation's largest interdisciplinary organization devoted to the field of aging - has chosen Eileen M. Sullivan-Marx, PhD, RN, FAAN, dean of the New York University College of Nursing, as the 2013 recipient of the Doris Schwartz Gerontological Nursing Research Award.
