The spirit of St. Patrick's Day is alive and well. The Muscular Dystrophy Association today announced that, with 92 percent of some 10,000 retail locations reporting, its 2010 Shamrocks Against Dystrophy fundraiser is the most successful in the event's 27 year history.
Recent recommendations by the US Preventive Task Force on Breast Cancer advising that women under the age of 50 should not get routine mammograms have resulted in fierce debate within the medical community. According to a new oncology study from ORC, an Infogroup Company, 70 percent of oncologists and 60 percent of ob-gyns disagree with the assertion that women should not get mammograms before the age of 50.
A fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) not only cured a case of Clostridium difficile (C. diff) infection in a 66 year old man; it eliminated populations of multi-drug resistant organisms both in the patient's gastrointestinal tract, and several other body sites.
Cells in the nervous system can "put the brakes" on the immune response to infections in the gut and lungs to prevent excessive inflammation, according to research by Weill Cornell Medicine scientists.
