Northwestern Medicine scientists have discovered a new cause of Parkinson's disease - mutations in a gene called TMEM230. This appears to be the third gene definitively linked to confirmed cases of the common movement disorder.
Peptide-receptor radionuclide therapy has been a subject of growing research on neuroendocrine tumors, which take up residence in a variety of organs replete with nerve cells that respond to hormone signaling.
Genetic testing for mutations beyond those currently recommended in medical guidelines may aid the identification of more couples at risk of having a child with cystic fibrosis, according to a study presented today at the 2015 American Society of Human Genetics Annual Meeting, which runs through October 10 in Baltimore, Maryland.
Sanofi-aventis and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced that the Phase 3 VELOUR clinical trial of aflibercept (VEGF Trap) in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) will continue to completion as planned, with no modifications due to efficacy or safety concerns. This decision is based on the recommendation of an Independent Data Monitoring Committee (IDMC) following a planned interim analysis.
Most humans would like to shed their fatty exteriors, but tuberculosis (TB)-causing bacteria rely on theirs for survival. Scientists at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ)-New Jersey Medical School have now discovered a drug that cripples the TB bug by dissolving its protective fatty coating, a finding that could eventually be used to improve TB treatment in humans. The study has been posted online by Nature Chemical Biology.
