Study indicates public and private funding for US biomedical research has decreased substantially

The rate of increase for funding of biomedical research in the U.S. has slowed since 2005, and the level of funding from the National Institutes of Health and industry appears to have decreased by 2 percent in 2008, after adjustment for inflation, according to an article in the January 13 issue of JAMA.

Researchers develop new protocol for evaluating motion sickness in driverless cars

What good is a driverless car if riding in it makes you nauseous? Up to one-third of Americans experience motion sickness, according to the National Institutes of Health. In a car, the condition tends to flare when you're a passenger rather than a driver, and when you're engaged in something other than looking out the window reading or using a handheld device, for example.

AMP publishes updated position statement on the regulation of LDPs

The Association for Molecular Pathology (AMP), the premier global, non-profit organization serving molecular testing professionals and leading education initiatives, discussions, and policy actions central to improving the development and application of molecular diagnostics, today reaffirmed its position that the vast majority of laboratory developed tests (LDTs), or laboratory developed procedures (LDPs)—a term coined by AMP to more appropriately capture the nature of these processes as medical services—should continue operating under the regulation of the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments program at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, and not be subject to pre-market review by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, as suggested in the draft guidance notification issued to Congress on July 31, 2014.
