Survey reveals impact of insomnia during menopause

Results released today from a survey of more than 900 women, who experienced sleep problems during menopause, shed light on the impact insomnia can have during this time in a woman's life. The survey also revealed that for many women, insomnia during menopause is not proactively addressed by their healthcare provider (HCP) and that often times, women don't communicate their symptoms to their HCP.

Health care lobbyists spend big to win big, consumer groups fight industry deals

Health care lobbyists are on track to set new spending records this year, with some individual companies nearly doubling their investment compared to previous periods, USA Today reports. The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America spent almost as much by September as it did in the entire year in 2008. America's Health Insurance Plans has spent $1 million more so far this year than over the same period last year (Schouten, 10/21).

Fat kids better off doing less intensive exercise if they are to shed the pounds effectively

The researchers assessed the rate at which fat was burned (fat oxidation) during graded leg cycling exercises in thirty 12 year old boys, 17 of whom were obese. The others were lean and healthy.

A new study shows that osteoporotic fractures increase a person's risk of dying, even after relatively minor fractures if that person is elderly.

HIV/AIDS advocates petition Sen. Reid to override Sen. Coburn's block on PEPFAR reauthorization bills

In a petition generated by MoveOn.org recently presented to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), advocates asked him to override seven Republican senators, led by Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), who are blocking a vote on measures (HR 5501, S 2731) aimed at reauthorizing the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, CQ Today reports. More than 15,000 people have signed the petition, according to CQ Today (Graham-Silverman, CQ Today, 6/13).
