Two studies conducted by researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago and Northwestern University have found that commonly used botanicals do not have an effect on hot flashes or on cognitive function in menopausal women.
"We transplanted the cells early in the animals' development when all the nutrients and signals they needed for differentiation were still there," says lead author Brenda Coles, a U of T laboratory technician working under the supervision of Professor Derek van der Kooy in the Department of Medical Genetics and Microbiology. "When their eyes fully developed, the human cells survived, migrated into the sensory part of the eye and formed the correct cells."
New results published in The Lancet today [Wednesday 23 October] reveal that five years after the first successful transplantation of a tissue-engineered airway (reported in The Lancet in 2008) the recipient continues to enjoy a good quality of life, and has not experienced any immunological complications or rejection of the implanted airway.
