NCCN Oncology Policy Summit focuses on off-label use of drugs and biologics

The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) announced today that key policy organizations and thought leaders will convene to discuss the critically important subject of the use of drugs and biologics for indications that are supported by evidence and compendia, but that are beyond the indications listed in the FDA label. This invitation-only Policy Summit will be held on December 17, 2010 at the National Press Club in Washington DC.

Childhood obesity leads to higher rate of problems during surgery

The (Portland) Oregonian: Prices vary radically for similar procedures at Oregon hospitals. "A balloon angioplasty to unclog heart arteries costs about $52,000 at St. Charles Medical Center in Bend, more than three times the typical amount insurers paid Tuality Community Hospital in Hillsboro, according to hospital payment comparisons posted online today by Oregon health officials."

New machine at Sahlgrenska Academy may contribute to more lung transplants

Four patients now have new lungs thanks to a purpose-built machine used for the first time worldwide by Sahlgrenska University Hospital. Acquired for research at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, Sweden, the new machine will contribute to more lung transplants in the long term.

Anesthesiology: An anesthesiologist is trained to provide pain relief and maintenance, or restoration, of a stable condition during and immediately following an operation or an obstetric or diagnostic procedure. The anesthesiologist assesses the risk of the patient undergoing surgery and optimizes the patient's condition prior to, during and after surgery. In addition to these management responsibilities, the anesthesiologist provides medical management and consultation in pain management and critical care medicine. Anesthesiologists diagnose and treat acute, long-standing and cancer pain problems; diagnose and treat patients with critical illnesses or severe injuries; direct resuscitation in the care of patients with cardiac or respiratory emergencies, including the need for artificial ventilation; and supervise post-anesthesia recovery.
