Neurosurgeons perform world's first operation on 'habenula' to treat depression

A team of neurosurgeons at Heidelberg University Hospital and psychiatrists at the Central Institute of Mental Health, Mannheim have for the first time successfully treated a patient suffering from severe depression by stimulating the habenula, a tiny nerve structure in the brain.

ACT Biotech reports positive interim data from Telatinib Phase 2 trial for advanced gastric cancer

ACT Biotech Inc., a privately held biotechnology company based in San Francisco, California, today announced positive interim data from a Phase 2 trial of the Company's lead oral kinase inhibitor, Telatinib, for the first-line treatment of patients with advanced gastric cancer. This proof-of-concept, multi-center, open label trial was designed to test the efficacy and safety of full-dose Telatinib, administered continuously, as a first-line treatment in combination with a standard regimen of capecitabine and cisplatin in US and European patients.

Repros receives US patent for Androxal

Repros Therapeutics Inc. today announced the US Patent and Trademark office has issued U.S. Patent No. 7,759,360 for Androxal, the Company's lead program for the treatment of low testosterone in men. This patent specifically claims methods and materials for the treatment of testosterone deficiency in men with secondary hypogonadism. Repros has over 35 issued or pending US and European patents involving Androxal.

Reitman Family Foundation Distinguished Chair in Cardiovascular Innovation at the Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals Harrington-McLaughlin Heart & Vascular Institute, has recently received a $4.7 million contract from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to fund the development of a new class of drugs that will selectively dilate blood cells under hypoxia (lack of oxygen in the body's tissues) and thereby enhance soldiers' performance at high altitude.
