DePuy Orthopaedics sued over faulty hip-implant devices

Hip-implant surgery is commonplace, but a higher than expected number of failures began to surface in patients who had received an implanted device manufactured by a division of J&J. According to company statistics, about one in eight implant patients requires a painful and expensive second procedure called a "revision surgery."

Reduction in secondhand smoking associated with fewer cases of middle ear infection among children

Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) researchers and colleagues from Research Institute for a Tobacco Free Society have found that a reduction in secondhand smoking in American homes was associated with fewer cases of otitis media, the scientific name for middle ear infection. The study appears on January 26, 2011, as an online first article on the website of the journal Tobacco Control.

Wound complications in cesarean delivery closure: Subcuticular sutures safer than staples

In a study to be presented today at the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine's (SMFM) annual meeting, The Pregnancy Meeting -, in Chicago, researchers will present findings that there were less complications for women, after having a cesarean delivery, if sutures were used instead of staples to close the wound.
