ZymoGenetics' IL-21 Phase 2 clinical trial in metastatic melanoma meets primary endpoint

ZymoGenetics, Inc. today announced positive results from a Phase 2 clinical trial in metastatic melanoma with recombinant Interleukin 21 (IL-21) as a single agent. The trial met the primary endpoint of efficacy, as measured by objective response rate or lack of early disease progression. Overall response rate was 23.1%, in evaluable patients, and median progression-free survival was 4.3 months. The results were presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting.

New insight into oocyte chromosome abnormalities

Ovarian stimulation undertaken by women of advanced maternal age receiving fertility treatment may be disrupting the normal pattern of meiosis - a critical process of chromosome duplication followed by two specialised cell divisions in the production of oocytes and sperm - and leading to abnormalities of chromosome copy numbers that result in IVF failure, pregnancy loss or, more rarely, the birth of affected children with conditions such as Down's syndrome, which is caused by the inheritance of three copies of chromosome 21.
