Investigators at Hospital for Special Surgery, collaborating with researchers from other institutions, have contributed to the discovery that a gene called interferon regulator factor-8 (IRF-8) is involved in the development of diseases such as periodontitis (gum disease), rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis. The study, which will be published online August 30, ahead of print, in the journal Nature Medicine, could lead to new treatments in the future.

Nature to change study reporting method of creating stem cells without destroying embryos

Officials from the journal Nature have said they plan to change a paper published in the journal's Aug. 24 edition describing a technique that could derive human embryonic stem cells without destroying the embryo to further clarify that none of the embryos used in this particular study survived the experiment, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Mutations in the glucocerebrosidase gene are risk factors for Parkinson's disease

People with a certain gene mutation are more likely to get Parkinson's disease before the age of 50 compared to those without the gene abnormality, according to a study published in the September 18, 2007, issue of Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.
