Siemens, NKF form new alliance to improve screening for kidney disease in high-risk individuals

Siemens Healthcare and the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) announced today a new strategic alliance focusing on education, awareness and screening for kidney disease in high-risk individuals. Pfizer's first-quarter 2010 revenues increase 54% to $16.8 billion

Pfizer Inc. today reported financial results for first-quarter 2010. Since the acquisition of Wyeth was completed on October 15, 2009, legacy Wyeth operations are reflected in first-quarter 2010 results, but not in first-quarter 2009 results. First-quarter 2010 revenues were $16.8 billion, an increase of 54% compared with $10.9 billion in the year-ago quarter.

Non-pharmaceutical interventions may be helpful in severe influenza outbreaks

An analysis of non-pharmaceutical interventions used in the U.S. during the 1918-1919 influenza pandemic, such as closing schools and banning public gatherings, found an association between these interventions and reduced death rates, suggesting that non-pharmaceutical interventions may play a role in planning for future influenza pandemics, according to a study in the August 8 issue of JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association.

Conatus commences multi-center CTS-1027 Phase 2b trial for HCV treatment

Conatus Pharmaceuticals Inc. announced today the treatment of the first patient in a multi-center Phase 2b clinical trial evaluating CTS-1027 in combination with Peginterferon Alfa-2a and ribavirin in a treatment experienced, hepatitis C null responder patient population. Safety, tolerability, and antiviral activity of the triple combination will be assessed after up to 48 weeks of therapy.
