Stroke risk and food – large European study says what to eat and what to avoid

In one of the most extensive studies, researchers have found the connection between different types of food and types of stroke risk. The study titled, "The associations of major foods and fiber with risks of ischaemic and hemorrhagic stroke: a prospective study of 418,329 participants in the EPIC cohort across nine European countries," was published in the latest issue of the journal European Heart Journal today.

Antipsychotic medication can reduce violent crime among people with psychiatric illness

New data indicate that people with psychiatric illness are almost half as likely to commit a violent crime when taking antipsychotic medication (such as clozapine or risperidone) compared with when they are not using such medication. The reduction in violent crime was smaller with use of mood stabilising drugs (such as lithium or carbamazepine) and only apparent among male patients with bipolar disorder.

UCSD Skaggs School of Pharmacy, Janssen R&D partner to identify new therapeutic targets for Chagas disease

Researchers at the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of California, San Diego have entered into a research collaboration with Janssen Research & Development, LLC, one of the Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson, to identify new therapeutic targets for Chagas disease, a parasitic infection that is the leading cause of heart failure in Latin America.
