Computer simulations show low prevalence of TB increases MDR-TB risk

While the U.S. has made great progress in the prevention and treatment of tuberculosis, the nation has become more susceptible to potential epidemics of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB), according a study led by Johns Hopkins researchers. Computer simulations show that as TB prevalence falls, the risk for more extensive MDR-TB increases.

Scientists use specialized fluorescent protein to study nerve cell activity

Electrical currents are invisible to the naked eye - at least they are when they flow through metal cables. In nerve cells, however, scientists are able to make electrical signals visible. Working with fellow experts from Switzerland and Japan, scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research in Heidelberg successfully used a specialized fluorescent protein to visualize electrical activity in neurons of living mice.

Japanese Patent granted for Pharmalink AB's Nefecon

Pharmalink AB announced today that it has been granted Japanese Patent No 4326696, "Methods and means for treating glomerulonephritis" for its product Nefecon(R) which is being developed to treat IgA nephropathy, a glomerulonephritis leading to end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Counterparts of the patent have been issued for other territories including the EU, US and China.
