UNITAID and the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation today launched an initiative that will dramatically scale up HIV diagnosis among newborns in nine African countries. In partnership with ministries of health, this initiative will make "point-of-care" testing more widely available to HIV-exposed infants early in their lives, when they are most at risk of dying, and enable those diagnosed with the virus to be put on lifesaving treatment more quickly.

Cell Therapeutics, Inc. announced that data from a study with OPAXIO, in patients with newly diagnosed high-grade gliomas, and interim results from a study of tosedostat in elderly patients with relapsed or refractory acute myeloid leukemia, will be presented at the 2011 American Society of Clinical Oncology Annual Meeting, which will be held June 3-7, 2011, in Chicago, Illinois. Both studies were selected for oral poster discussion sessions.
In an update of the project portfolio, Karo Bio announced, among other things, that the company, in accordance with earlier communicated plans, has submitted an IND application for eprotirome to the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA); that a candidate drug has been nominated within the ER-beta program; and that the company has decided not to initiate further in-house development of KB3305 for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
