New set of genes can indicate improved survival after surgery for pancreatic cancer patients

A study by the Translational Genomics Research Institute and other major research institutes, found a new set of genes that can indicate improved survival after surgery for patients with pancreatic cancer. The study also showed that detection of circulating tumor DNA in the blood could provide an early indication of tumor recurrence.

Children may be particularly susceptible to avian influenza

New findings, reported in in the online open access journal Respiratory Research, about how the virus binds to the respiratory tract and lung suggest children may be particularly susceptible to avian influenza.

AAA announces recipients of Young Investigator Awards

The American Association of Anatomist's (AAA) Young Investigator Awards combine three long-standing AAA awards-Bensley, Herrick, and Mossman-with the recently established Morphological Sciences Award, all recognizing investigators in the early stages of their careers who have made important contributions to biomedical science through their research in cell/molecular biology, developmental biology, comparative neuroanatomy, or the morphological sciences.

TTUHSC El Paso researcher awarded $375,000 grant to develop genetically altered TB vaccines

A $375,000 grant from the Robert J. Kleberg Jr. and Helen C. Kleberg Foundation was awarded to Subramanian Dhandayuthapani, Ph.D., an associate professor in the Center of Emphasis in Infectious Diseases at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso Paul L. Foster School of Medicine, to develop genetically altered vaccines against tuberculosis (TB).
