NRS Healthcare publishes new free Carer's Guide to Alzheimer's Disease

40% of family caregivers looking after someone with Alzheimer's say they experience high or very high emotional stress levels. In support of World Alzheimer's Awareness Month, NRS Healthcare have released a Carer's Guide to Alzheimer's Disease in order to highlight the vital role that carers play and to offer some advice on dealing with specific situations carers may encounter.

Study: More PCIs classified as appropriate for acute indications in the U.S.

In an examination of the appropriateness of the widespread use of percutaneous coronary interventions (PCIs), researchers found that of more than 500,000 PCIs included in the study, nearly all for acute indications were classified as appropriate, whereas only about half of PCIs performed for nonacute indications could be classified as appropriate, according to a study in the July 6 issue of JAMA.

Naltrexone may help men and women quit smoking without gaining weight

Naltrexone is a medication that blocks the effects of drugs such as morphine, heroin and codeine. It also has been approved for use in treating alcoholism and is being investigated for its ability to help smokers quit.

Providing aid is not an overly generous act

Noting that aid "has mixed impacts," Jonathan Glennie, a research fellow with the Overseas Development Institute, writes in the Guardian's "Poverty Matters Blog" that "there is one argument against aid that we need to tackle head on; the idea that we cannot afford aid, that we are being over-generous, especially in a time of cuts at home."

Limb-sparing technique called rotationplasty helps very young children with bone cancer

The current issue of New England Journal of Medicine illustrates a case of a five-year-old girl with Ewing's sarcoma, a cancerous tumor, behind her left knee. Surgeons at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia used a limb-sparing technique called rotationplasty to remove the diseased portion of bone, turn the shortened portion of the leg bone in a half-circle and reattach it, with the ankle joint functioning as a knee.
