Study looks at firearm-related mortality among children and adolescents in the U.S.

Children in the U.S. are just as likely to die from gunshot wounds if they live in the largest cities or the smallest towns. However, teens living in the most urban counties are more likely to die from gun violence, while children in the most remote areas of the country are more likely to die in gun-related accidents or suicides, according to new research by The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Enrollment begins for first major cardiovascular prevention trial for people infected with HIV

The first clinical trial to investigate whether treatment with a statin drug can reduce the increased cardiovascular disease risk in people infected with HIV has begun enrolling patients. Based at Massachusetts General Hospital, the six-year, $40 million REPRIEVE (Randomized Study to Prevent Vascular Events in HIV) trial will be conducted at around 100 sites in the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico and Thailand with funding from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute in collaboration with the AIDS Clinical Trials Group and support from the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Use of vitamin K antagonists is driven by availability of oral formulation

Arlington Medical Resources (AMR), a provider of premier market intelligence for the pharmaceutical and diagnostic imaging industries, finds that, in the treatment of atrial fibrillation, surveyed European cardiologists indicate that use of vitamin K antagonists, as a class, is primarily driven by the availability of an oral formulation, overall low cost and widespread inclusion on European medical society guidelines and hospital formularies.

Segasist Technologies receives HTX funding for clinical validation of prostate MRI software

Segasist Technologies, a Canadian software company developing contouring productivity tools for medical imaging, has today announced the receipt of funding from The Health Technology Exchange (HTX) towards support of clinical validation of its software, to be conducted at the Lawson Health Research Institute and London Health Sciences Centre (London, Ontario). Experts from Sunnybrook Research Institute and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre will also participate in the validation process by providing input in the form of gold standard contours.

Eribulin drug has minor added benefit in one patient group, indication of lesser benefit in others

Eribulin (trade name: Halaven) is approved for women with locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer in whom the disease has progressed despite prior drug therapy. The German Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG) examined in a dossier assessment whether the drug offers an added benefit over the appropriate comparator therapy in these patient groups.
