More research needed on uterine fibroid treatment options
A systematic review of the research concerning treatment options for uterine fibroids, which affect most American women over 50, reveals surprisingly little evidence to help compare standard treatment recommendations, according to a report by researchers at the RTI International-University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Evidence-based Practice Center, which is sponsored by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.
Decreased levels of binding gene affect memory and behavior
Reducing the activity of a gene called FKBP12 in the brains of mice affected neuron-to-neuron communication (synapse) and increased both fearful memory and obsessive behavior, indicating the gene could provide a target for drugs to treat diseases such as autism spectrum disorder, obsessive-compulsive disease and others, said researchers from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston in a report in the current issue of the journal Neuron.

Coventry Health Care, Inc. today reported consolidated operating results for the quarter ended June 30, 2010. Operating revenues totaled $2.9 billion for the quarter with net earnings of $1.0 million, or $0.01 earnings per diluted share (EPS). These results include a favorable impact from the Medicare Advantage Private Fee-for-Service (MA-PFFS) product of $0.18 EPS and an unfavorable impact related to the previously announced provider class action litigation in Louisiana of $1.18 EPS.
