Antidepressants can increase depression, mood cycling in rapid-cycling bipolar disorder patients

In patients with rapid-cycling bipolar disorder, antidepressants can increase incidents of depression and mood cycling. Rif S. El-Mallakh, M.D., director of the Mood Disorders Clinical and Research Program at the University of Louisville, along with Nassir Ghaemi, M.D., of Tufts University and other researchers, conducted the first randomized clinical trial that analyzes how modern antidepressants affect patients with rapid-cycling (RC) bipolar disorder (BD).

New research may enhance the treatment for blood cancer in children

Acute lymphatic leukemia is the most common form of blood cancer in children. Even though chemotherapy is improving, the cancer often returns. Johan Jansson's research at Kalmar University in Sweden shows that cancer cells that have been exposed to chemotherapy and survived are less vulnerable to chemotherapy, and more aggressive as well. But this research also yielded discoveries that should be able to enhance our treatment of the disease.

MS Longest Day of Golf event to raise funds for MS research

More than 40 of Michigan's best golf courses are donating greens fees on select dates in May, allowing golfers to play for free while raising funds for multiple sclerosis research, programs and services. 2010 marks the 20th anniversary of the National MS Society Michigan Chapter's "MS Longest Day of Golf" event, which takes place in both May and September.
