New drug patiromer could improve potassium levels of patients with diabetic kidney disease

Among patients with diabetic kidney disease and hyperkalemia (elevated potassium levels in the blood), a potentially life-threatening condition, those who received the new drug patiromer, twice daily for four weeks, had significant decreases in potassium levels which lasted through one year, according to a study in the July 14 issue of JAMA.

NIH awards $12M over 3 years to promote diversity in scientific workforce

The National Institutes of Health has awarded six grants totaling approximately $12 million over three years through a new initiative aimed at fostering a diverse scientific workforce. The initiative, called the NIH Director's ARRA Funded Pathfinder Award to Promote Diversity in the Scientific Workforce, is funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and administered by NIH's National Institute of General Medical Sciences.

Sirolimus reduces risk of cancer in kidney transplant patients

A new study published in this month's issue of the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology shows that the risk of cancer in kidney transplant recipients was reduced by more than 50% at five years post transplantation in those patients who were treated with sirolimus following withdrawal of cyclosporine at three months.
