Oral anticoagulant use after hospital discharge may offer protection from non-fatal blood clots

The use of an oral anticoagulant medicine in medically ill patients for 45 days following their discharge from the hospital reduces the rate of non-fatal symptomatic blood clots with no impact on fatal blood clots, according to late breaking results from the MARINER trial presented today in a Hot Line Session at ESC Congress 2018 and published in The New England Journal of Medicine.

New drug works better than current treatments for advanced kidney cancer

A new drug has been found superior to current treatments in slowing the growth of advanced kidney cancer in patients who became resistant to the first-line therapies that had kept it in check, according to results from a clinical trial led by Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Excess folic acid intake causes lowered immune function in aged mice

Previous studies have shown an association between high folic acid intake and a reduction in the immune system defenses needed to fight viral infections and cancer. In a new study in mice published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, scientists at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University set out to determine if excess folic acid intake caused adverse changes in the immune system.

Mirna Therapeutics announced today publication of new results in the journal Cancer Research demonstrating proof of concept that the systemic delivery of tumor suppressor microRNAs (miRNA) inhibits tumor growth by restoring the proper regulatory pathways required for cell cycle arrest and apoptosis.
