2011 National Report Card on Lung Cancer notes significant change in grade for early detection

Today, Lung Cancer Alliance (LCA), the leading national support and advocacy voice for those at risk for or living with lung cancer, issued its annual 2011 National Report Card on Lung Cancer, an overall assessment of the nation's response to the continuing high mortality of lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer death.

Targeting PCS may help improve health of patients with chronic kidney disease

Insulin resistance, or prediabetes, in individuals with kidney disease may be caused by the progressive retention of certain compounds that are normally excreted by the kidneys in healthy individuals, according to a study appearing in an upcoming issue of the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN).

Potential new target in the war on HIV/AIDS

The study revealed that a variant of a protein involved in HIV pathogenesis can suppress production of an HIV protein, known as Nef. Nef is required for the human immunodeficiency virus to develop into AIDS through a series of complex events involving viral elements and cellular proteins. Nef has never been a target for drug treatment in HIV patients.

Philippines to spend nearly $12M on contraceptives to bolster family planning, reduce maternal mortality rate

The government of the Philippines plans to spend nearly $12 million on contraceptives this year in an effort to "save its 'failed' family planning program and drastically cut maternal deaths," according to the Department of Health, IRIN reports.
