Chemists adapt natural strategies to improve performance of DNA detectors

Over their 3.8 billion years of evolution, living organisms have developed countless strategies for monitoring their surroundings. Chemists at UC Santa Barbara and University of Rome Tor Vergata have adapted some of these strategies to improve the performance of DNA detectors. Their findings may aid efforts to build better medical diagnostics, such as improved HIV or cancer tests.

Artisan Pharma enrolls 750 patients in Phase 2b study of ART-123 in sepsis patients with DIC

Artisan Pharma, Inc., a private biopharmaceutical company dedicated to bringing best-in-class critical care therapeutics to patients, today announced the completion of patient enrollment in its Phase 2b study of ART-123 (Recomodulin® - recombinant human thrombomodulin) in sepsis patients with disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). The clinical trial was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled Phase 2b study to assess the safety and efficacy of ART-123 in patients with sepsis and DIC.

Insomnia patients commonly underestimate their actual sleep behavior

People with sleep disorders commonly have a misperception about their actual sleep behavior. A research group led by Karin Trimmel and Stefan Seidel from MedUni Vienna's Department of Neurology (Outpatient Clinic for Sleep Disorders and Sleep-Related Disorders) analyzed polysomnography results to identify the types of sleep disorder that are associated with a discrepancy between self-reported and objective sleep parameters and whether there are any factors that influence this.
