CCN5, a matricellular protein, has been found to reverse established cardiac fibrosis in heart failure models, according to a study led by Roger J. Hajjar, MD, Professor of Medicine and Director of the Cardiovascular Research Center at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and Woo Jin Park, PhD, Professor of Life Sciences at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, South Korea.
The two main ways to prevent and control influenza today are annual immunization and antiviral drugs. A team of investigators has found that statins, cholesterol-lowering drugs, may offer an additional treatment to complement these approaches and reduce mortality among patients hospitalized with influenza.
The GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences is pleased to announce a new educational and research affiliation with the Washington Center for Psychoanalysis that will provide educational opportunities for GW's medical students and residents, as well as consultative relationships with the SMHS medical humanities program.
The GAVI Alliance "has struck a deal for bulk buying rotavirus shots from GlaxoSmithKline and Merck, which cuts the price by two-thirds and will allow poorer countries access to them at around $5 per course," Reuters reports.
New chemotherapy agents appear associated with improvements in survival time for patients with metastatic colorectal cancer but at substantial cost.
