Scientists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego and their colleagues at Creighton University have deciphered the highly unusual molecular structure of a naturally produced, ocean-based compound that is giving new understanding of the function of mammalian nerve cells.
The case of Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.), who has been diagnosed with brain cancer, is "identical from a regulatory standpoint to the plight of hundreds of thousands of other Americans" and "shouts to the heavens the humane necessity of urgent reform in the drug approval process to make it work better for people who have serious and terminal diseases," according to a Wall Street Journal opinion piece by Steven Walker and Ronald Trowbridge, chief adviser and adjunct scholar, respectively, of the Abigail Alliance for Better Access to Developmental Drugs.
Effective, non-invasive and practically without side effects - extracorporeal shock wave therapy has demonstrated impressive results not only in orthopedics and traumatology, but also in treating fresh and chronic wounds as well as circulatory disorders of the myocardial muscle.
When cells become cancerous, they also become 100 times more likely to genetically mutate than regular cells, researchers have found. The findings may explain why cells in a tumor have so many genetic mutations, but could also be bad news for cancer treatments that target a particular gene controlling cancer malignancy.
