Despite many research advances, ovarian cancer remains lethal in a majority of cases, due to late diagnosis of the disease. In a new study, Dr. Joshua LaBaer of the Biodesign Institute at Arizona State University, along with Arturo Ramirez and Paul Lampe, researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, used a novel method for identifying biomarkers-proteins in blood that can identify ovarian cancer before symptoms appear.
Diagnostic tests are critical as up to 60 to 70% of critical clinical decisions are influenced by diagnostic test results. It's of huge importance to the running of any healthcare system. Dr. Jocelyn Rapelyea, Associate Director of Breast Imaging and Intervention at George Washington University Medical Center in Washington, D.C., demonstrated how occult lesions identified with Breast-Specific Gamma Imaging (BSGI) can be localized utilizing multi-modality imaging for needle biopsy as well, as for pre-operative localization today at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).
Aptus Endosystems Inc., a medical device company developing advanced technology for endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR), announced that several patients with aortic aneurysm disease have been successfully treated with the Aptus EndoStapling System in Europe. The innovative helical staple technology enables independent endograft fixation, and is designed to approximate suturing in an open surgical anastomosis. The company continues to build on its U.S. clinical experience which includes 176 patients and deployment of more than 900 EndoStaples.
