The Queensland Nurses Union has condemned health authorities for failing to act over concerns that their work places and residences in the Torres Straits are unsafe.
Cernostics Inc., a biotechnology firm specializing in advanced cancer diagnostics, and Geisinger Health System, a $2.1 billion integrated health services organization, today announced a partnership in personalized healthcare. They will focus on developing diagnostic technologies to detect subtle differences in the cellular and molecular makeup of patient tissue samples. These technologies promise to more effectively predict disease progression and identify patients who are most likely to be receptive to specific cancer treatments.
At a meeting of the Gulf Cooperation Council to address global food security, ministers "pledged to a set of recommendations meant to improve co-operation and develop policies that could cope with a sudden interruption of food supplies" and vowed to "improve co-operation with international bodies such as the U.N.'s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) on food security matters," The National reports (Detrie, 11/24).
Most of us think of DNA mutations as the culprits that cause cancer. Scott Ness, PhD, University of New Mexico Professor of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology and Associate Director at the UNM Cancer Center, thinks there may be another, more elusive culprit. If Dr. Ness is right his research, funded as part of the National Cancer Institute's Provocative Questions Project, might open a whole new arena in which to target anticancer drugs.
President Obama's aides are largely staying attached to his administration to help bolster the President's approval ratings amid the health law's considerable problems. In the meantime, the law's proponents are pushing new ways of selling the law.
