A new study presented today at the European League Against Rheumatism Annual Congress showed that obese patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have higher DAS (disease activity) scores than non-obese patients, irrespective of their disease stage.

Results of Phase IIb dose range finding of oglemilast in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease announced

Forest Laboratories, Inc. (NYSE: FRX) and Glenmark Pharmaceuticals S.A. (Switzerland), a wholly owned subsidiary of Glenmark Pharmaceuticals India (GPL) today announced top-line results from a Phase IIb dose range-finding study of oglemilast in patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Once-daily treatment with oglemilast did not show a statistically meaningful increase from baseline compared to placebo in the primary endpoint trough FEV1, a measure of pulmonary function that is decreased in patients with COPD. Oglemilast was well tolerated at all doses studied.

A pilot study gathers baseline information on subway workers' exposure to airborne metals

Steel dust exposure in the NYC subway system has been of concern to subway workers and transit police for decades. A study by Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory researchers will examine the level of airborne metal in subway workers.

Lipitor 80 mg may help reduce risk of major cardiovascular events in high-risk patients

LipitorĀ® (atorvastatin calcium) 80 mg was associated with a significantly reduced risk of major cardiovascular events compared with Lipitor 10 mg among patients with both coronary heart disease (CHD) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) who were obese or had metabolic syndrome. These data, from two sub-analyses of the Treating to New Targets (TNT) trial that were designed and completed following the completion of TNT, were presented today at the 59th Annual Scientific Session of the American College of Cardiology (ACC) in Atlanta, Ga.
