When the Fukushima power plant released large quantities of radioactive materials into nearby coastal waters following Japan's massive 2011 earthquake and tsunami, it raised concerns as to whether eating contaminated seafood might impair human health-not just locally but across the Pacific.
Asynt has introduced new reaction inserts for its DrySyn Heating Block range enabling scientists to now conduct precisely controlled heated/stirred experiments in 3 Dram vials, 20ml Scintillation vials and 2ml HPLC sample vials. The new multi position blocks when combined with a DrySyn base unit allow up to 27 experiments to be performed in parallel.
Cubist Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: CBST) today announced that The Lancet Infectious Diseases published online the positive results from ESTABLISH-2, a pivotal Phase 3 clinical trial of the investigational antibiotic SIVEXTRO™ (tedizolid phosphate), which is being developed for the treatment of acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSI) and complicated skin and soft tissue infections (cSSTI).
Metabolic changes in cells can occur at the earliest stages of disease. In most cases, knowledge of those signals is limited, since we usually detect disease only after it has done significant damage. Now, a team led by engineers at Tufts University School of Engineering has opened a window into the cell by developing an optical tool that can read metabolism at subcellular resolution, without having to perturb cells with contrast agents, or destroy them to conduct assays.
In a study published this week in the journal Nature, researchers at the University of Liège's GIGA Unit, together with English and German teams, reveal the central role played by a protein complex, unknown up to now, in gene transcription.
