Children who live in areas with fewer pediatricians are more likely to suffer life-threatening ruptures of the appendix than those in areas with more pediatricians, even when accounting for other factors such as the number of hospitals, imaging technology, insurance coverage and the number of surgeons in an area, according to a study from the Johns Hopkins Children's Center.
In this Scientific American opinion piece, author and former staff writer at Scientific American John Horgan examines "a bitter debate" among scientists over the publication of controversial H5N1 research, writing, "Research involving the bird-flu virus H5N1 poses an especially knotty dilemma, in which scientists' commitment to openness - and to reducing humanity's vulnerability to potential health threats - collides with broader security concerns."
A new study shows that air pollution at levels below the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) could cut short life spans. This was one of the largest air pollution studies with more than a whopping 60 million senior citizens participating. The study was published in the Thursday's edition of the journal New England Journal of Medicine.
While vaccines are perhaps medicine's most important success story, there is always room for improvement. Researchers at Oregon Health & Science University's Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC) appear to have done just that.
