Los Angeles County officials are questioning the "cost-effectiveness of rules aimed at screening those trying to get public health services," The Los Angeles Times reports. The county began implementing tougher federal standards in 2008, receiving "nearly $28 million in state and federal funds to cover the cost of the program and posted 81 people in 27 social service department offices to check documents."
Researchers at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden have identified eight primary factors that increase the risk of a common bleeding complication after heart attack. Some of these factors are already known, but using machine learning techniques, the researchers have found additional predictors, such as smoking, blood pressure and blood glucose.
An 'astonishing' deficit of data about how the global boom in educational technology could help pupils with disabilities in low and middle-income countries has been highlighted in a new report.
Study investigators today reported initial data from Cook Medical's REFORM clinical trial that is aimed at assessing the safety and effectiveness of the company's balloon-expandable renal stent for the treatment of renal artery stenosis. The data, presented by Robert Bersin, M.D., at ISET 2011, reveal a nine-month primary patency rate of 89.5 percent and a 97 percent rate of successful delivery and deployment of the stent.
A study has shown that one in two Americans between age 50 and 64 years is aware of the risk of development of dementia with age but only 5 percent are actually visiting their healthcare providers to seek preventive and therapeutic attention.
