Tiny parasitic hookworms infect nearly half a billion people worldwide-almost exclusively in developing countries-causing health problems ranging from gastrointestinal issues to cognitive impairment and stunted growth in children. By sequencing and analyzing the genome of one particular hookworm species, Caltech researchers have uncovered new information that could aid the fight against these parasites.
Researchers of the Human Molecular Genetics group at the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute, led by Dr. Sara Larriba, in collaboration with Dr. Francesc Vigués and Dr. Manel Castells of the Urology Service of Bellvitge University Hospital, show the usefulness of certain molecules, the miRNAs in semen, as non-invasive biomarkers for prostate cancer.
A risk reduction program focused on African American heterosexual couples appears to diminish risky sexual behaviors among couples in which one partner is HIV-positive and the other is not, according to a report posted online today that will appear in the September 27 print issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.
