Even as state revenues are showing signs of recovering, health costs remain a budget drain, according to a new report.
We're told that gridlock, procedural holds, partisanship and extreme ideology are preventing members of Congress from working together. While some of this analysis is true - Washington is petty, partisan and shortsighted - few are acknowledging that Congress does enjoy remarkable unity in one critical area: spending beyond our means (Sen. Tom Coburn, 2/26).
A newly available DNA-based prenatal blood test that can identify a pregnancy with Down syndrome can also identify two additional chromosome abnormalities: trisomy 18 (Edwards syndrome) and trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome). The test for all three defects can be offered as early as 10 weeks of pregnancy to women who have been identified as being at high risk for these abnormalities.
Routinely discarded as medical waste, placental tissue could feasibly provide an abundant source of cells with the same potential to treat diseases and regenerate tissues as their more controversial counterparts, embryonic stem cells, suggests a University of Pittsburgh study to be published in the journal Stem Cells and available now as an early online publication in Stem Cells Express.
A study has quantified emissions coming from radio frequency sources, and by means of personal and spot measurements has analyzed which levels of exposure children find themselves in.
