Interim data from a prospective Investigator Initiated Trial presented today at the ECTS, the 37th European Symposium on Calcified Tissues, in Glasgow, demonstrates that EVISTA (raloxifene 60mg; once-daily, distributed in 34 countries by DAIICHI SANKYO), indicated for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women, improves bone quality as measured by the high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography.
A new American Cancer Society study finds that despite significant drops in smoking rates, cigarettes continue to cause about three in ten cancer deaths in the United States. The study, appearing in the Annals of Epidemiology, concludes that efforts to reduce smoking prevalence as rapidly as possible should be a top priority for the U.S. public health efforts to prevent cancer deaths.
The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports that a "health care overhaul faces a tough sell among the Louisiana delegation:" "Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., said the bill pending ... isn't aggressive enough in trying to curb rising health care costs. But she also said that doing nothing is not an option with so many Louisiana families and small businesses unable to afford health coverage.
