Generic medications used frequently in the management of heart disease patients also have the potential to bolster the immune systems of patients with Ebola virus and some other life-threatening illnesses, researchers report this week in mBio, the online open-access journal of the American Society for Microbiology.
The Life Sciences Discovery Fund (LSDF) today announced $600,000 in awards to four Washington state-based research teams to support commercial development of health-related technologies. The funded projects will concentrate on improving the success rate of lumbar punctures (spinal taps) in children; developing a safer and more effective magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent; enhancing a DNA sequencing technology to profile T cells within the immune system; and developing a device to detect early stages of tooth decay.
Leading advocacy organizations American Jewish World Service, Women Thrive Worldwide and the Modernizing Foreign Assistance Network will mark International Women's Day, on March 8 at 8:30 a.m. with a breakfast and panel discussion highlighting the importance of women to a more effective, accountable, and results-oriented U.S. approach to promoting development in poor countries.
