Brown University researchers have created a new type of optoelectronic implantable device to access brain microcircuits, synergizing a technique that enables scientists to control the activity of brains cells using pulses of light.
Depressive symptoms are more common in teenage girls than in their male peers. However, boys' mental health appears to be affected more if they suffer from obesity.
Early intervention for children with autism, as young as 6 months of age, may change the development trajectory for later symptoms of the disorder according to a research project being spearheaded by the MIND Institute at the University of California Davis Medical Center. A recent study published by Pediatrics recorded randomized trials of daily therapy through games and pretend play for children, which demonstrated an improvement in I.Q., language and social skills.
"Civil society groups [in the U.S.] are praising parts of President Barack Obama's newly unveiled [FY 2014 budget request], saying it appears to build on momentum gathered in recent years toward a robust overhaul of the U.S. Agency for International Development, the country's main foreign aid agency," Inter Press Service reports.
