In this issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation, Karen Avraham and colleagues at Tel Aviv University identified a genetic mutation in two families with hereditary high frequency hearing loss. The mutated gene, which has not previously been linked to hearing loss, encodes NESP4, a protein that is expressed in the outer nuclear membrane (ONM) of the hair cells of the ear.
McKesson today announced that three more community hospitals have chosen the company's Practice Partner Patient Records electronic health record and practice management solution for their employed/affiliated physicians. The hospitals, which also selected the Paragon hospital information system to automate care processes in their inpatient settings, aim to enhance communication and care coordination among healthcare providers in their communities.
Although mothers often use pacifiers to comfort cranky babies, many experts fear that they can interfere with successful breastfeeding. However, a new review finds no association between the devices and early cessation of nursing.
With increasing numbers of men and women serving in combat and risking traumatic injury and limb loss, a new study published in The Journal of Pain, the peer-reviewed publication of the American Pain Society, concludes that self-reported amputation-specific pain severity is similar in men and women but there are considerable gender variations in overall pain outcomes, such as emotional health and pain-coping responses.
The Arizona Department of Health Services is urging the public to take appropriate precautions when living or working in rodent infested areas, following the confirmation of the state's first case of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) in 2005.
