Federal health IT officials said Wednesday that the proposed rules for the second stage of the federal program to fund electronic health records will be released Thursday. Office of the National Coordinator Director Farzad Mostashari and other top officials made the announcement at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society conference in Las Vegas to two ballrooms packed full of people who had hoped to see the details earlier this week.
A main reason why viruses such as HIV or hepatitis C persist despite a vigorous initial immune response is exhaustion. The T cells, or white blood cells, fighting a chronic infection eventually wear out.
Janakiram Seshu, associate professor of biology and associate dean of The Graduate School at The University of Texas at San Antonio, has received a $404,250 grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease to support his research to better understand and prevent the spread of Lyme disease.
In industrialized countries like in Europe, acute lymphoblastic leukemia is the most common form of cancer in children. An international research consortium lead by pediatric oncologists from the Universities of Zurich and Hannover has now succeeded in decoding a specific form of this leukemia, which is regarded as incurable, and in obtaining insights for new therapeutic possibilities.
Chevy Chase, MD-Patients with type 2 diabetes are generally treated similarly despite the fact that they may have underlying differences that could affect their therapeutic response. Seeking to address this critical health issue, an international multidisciplinary group of experts just issued recommendations for individualized treatment in a consensus statement to be published in the April 2010 issue of the Endocrine Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM).
