The Global CEO Initiative (CEOi) on Alzheimer's Disease and the New York Academy of Sciences today convened representatives from industry, academia, government and nonprofits to launch the development of a Global Alzheimer's Platform (GAP), designed to reduce the time and costs of Alzheimer's clinical trials, develop an infrastructure that promotes innovation, and assure international collaboration.
In a paper published in the December 2011 issue of Experimental Biology and Medicine, a team of scientists at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign led by Rex Gaskins, PhD have demonstrated that both microbial and host inflammatory factors modulate sulfomucin production in a human cell line, LS174T, that models intestinal goblet cells.
A common birth control device is effective in treating early-stage endometrial cancer in morbidly obese and high-risk surgery patients, said Georgia Health Sciences University Cancer Center researchers, and could lead to a cost-effective treatment for all women with this cancer type.
Vicon, the motion capture technology specialist for the entertainment, engineering and life sciences industries, has revealed that virtual reality will need to overcome key challenges including the production of affordable consumer devices, in order for it to become a success.
