A new study supported by the National Cancer Institute found a higher cancer risk for women with dense breasts. It's the tissue in women's breast that can differ by heredity, from more fatty to more dense tissue. Fatty tissue shows up dark on a mammogram, but fibrous or dense tissue shows up white. So do small tumors, which can make them hard to find. The study was published in the July 27 online edition of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
Two new studies confirm that women who suffer from lupus, a chronic disease that can lead to inflamed kidneys, can safely take oral contraceptives without fear that the pill will worsen their condition.
Glioblastoma is a serious and incurable brain cancer. Patients receiving this diagnosis typically have 11-20 months to live. One of the main difficulties in treating this cancer is that its cells quickly build up a resistance to chemotherapy.
Clarient, Inc., a premier technology and services resource for pathologists, oncologists and the pharmaceutical industry, today announced that privately held, Waltham, MA-based Minerva Biotechnologies has granted it the exclusive right to develop and commercialize a test that identifies the MUC1* protein, a biomarker researchers believe may be implicated in the spread of many cancers, including breast cancer.
Patients who have heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH), a condition that causes abnormally raised low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels and premature cardiovascular disease, can significantly reduce or even eliminate their need for expensive and time-consuming apheresis treatments with the PCSK9 inhibitor alirocumab.
