Researchers are moving closer to realizing the clinical potential of drugs that have previously been shown to support healthy aging in animals.
Clearly Contacts, a subsidiary of Coastal Contacts Inc., has taken the traditional industry of retailing eyeglasses and contact lenses in an optical store, and put it on the Internet for discounted prices. This innovative move has proven to be good business, surpassing all other Canadian Internet stores in sales for 2009.
A trio of studies being published today in the journals Science and Cell describes advances toward the development of an HIV vaccine. The three study teams all demonstrated techniques for stimulating animal cells to produce antibodies that either could stop HIV from infecting human cells in the laboratory or had the potential to evolve into such antibodies.
Scientists at the Gladstone Institutes have invented a new way to create three-dimensional human heart tissue from stem cells. The tissue can be used to model disease and test drugs, and it opens the door for a precision medicine approach to treating heart disease. Although there are existing techniques to make three-dimensional tissues from heart cells, the new method dramatically reduces the number of cells needed, making it an easier, cheaper, and more efficient system.
